The series “I Understand and I Wish to Continue” is a visual exploration of mortality salience. Mortality salience is the awareness by an individual that his or her death is inevitable. The term derives from terror management theory, which proposes that mortality salience causes existential anxiety that may be buffered by an individual’s cultural worldview and /or sense of self- esteem. The visual language of self- portrait and still life in the series, springs from religion, sci fi aesthetics, renaissance and Christianity, forming a type of cult. The title “ I Understand and I Wish to Continue” is a parallelism between mortality salience and the Terms of Service by which one must agree to abide in order to use a service. Terms of Service offer two options; either select “ I Understand and I Wish to Continue” or “ I do not wish to continue”. Options that humanity has to cope with from the start of its existence.
